Homage

I have decided to do my Homage brief about my nan who was a big influence in my life. I have lots of happy memories about the time i spent with my nan and so i think there is a lot of potential narrative to develop within this brief. My nan encouraged me to draw and taught me drawing techniques. I used to love visiting her as she would tell us fantastical stories about characters she had met and she would treat me and my brother all the time with plenty of sweets and chocolates, which she kept in a secret drawer and which was always full of different sweets every time we went.

I have started by looking at memories of my nan with a couple of test animations about the furnishings of her room, chintz and lace, and a memory i have of picking elderberries in the summer.

The human figure

I will looking at the work of Farrow for my essay on the human figure in art and design. I have chosen Farrow for their work with the Manic Street Preachers for their Lifeblood campaign and with Spiritualized featuring sculptures by Don Brown.

Art history research

After looking at images that inspire me for my FMP I have widened my research by connecting these images to other points in art history which have been inspired by or took inspiration from the original artist.

Zine : Info graphics

I have started working on a selection of info graphics addressing quite comical aspects of being ginger - the nicknames according to what shade your hair is, your temperament and personality traits as judged by other people. I think its amusing to look at the assumptions that are made over just one element of a person's appearance.

More zine experimentation

I have started working with the photos i took, bleaching them by photocopying them at high contrast and illustrating over them and using hand rendered typography. I plan to use red and orange as accent colours which hints at the subject of the zine, but the inverted black and white images widens the subject matter and allows me to address the wider themes of discrimination and stereotypes.

ZINE experimentation

Although my zine will be looking at the trivial subject of ginger hair and the comical stereotypes that exist about it, i also want to look at the wider theme of identity - how people are judged on appearance and how people hide insecurities behind exterior qualities.

Zine / GINGE

For our zine brief i am going to look at the good and bad stereotypes of & attitudes towards people with red hair. I think I'm going to call it GINGE. This is my moodboard looking at how red hair was regarded through art history and then more recent negative stereotypes. I want to look at the myth that people with ginger hair will become extinct and play on wildlife book illustration of extinct species and odd photos. I plan to use a mix of collage and illustration with handdrawn typography that expresses my feelings about being a redhead. I have also looked at the work of Ellen Gallagher and i love the way she appropriates images of her subject and makes them into surreal paper sculptures and plays with their identity and appearance.

Exploring some photos taken of mundane aspects of every day life, repeated most days, activity which we do unconsciously and take for granted as part of normal life...made to look quite nice! I like how only i can really make out what the photos are actually of.

I have experimented with clock face shapes and number styles and have used some of these shapes over footage of activities during a typical 24 hours, filmed using a flip camera. The films are quite rough and are just to explore how i might create a moving image installation to represent my analysis of 24 hours. I have chosen to start with journeys as this is when your mind is often vacant, especially since i don't drive and so have to travel on buses, trains or walk. I have filmed minute details of my journey and started to add in thoughts and shapes which represent my mood at that time.
