Stills from my final homage: parent experimental film and final film below with audio taken from old home movies and a motown track that i remember my dad playing when i was little.

4 lines make 1 square
Inspired by Kenneth Martin's work I have used a square made up of 4 lines to represent my family unit and deconstructed it as a reference to changing roles / responsibilities / relationships and the interactions between myself, my brother and my parents. I have animated this in sequence to use in my final animation.

Gallery Visits
Today I went to Ikon to see Robert Orchardson's Endless Facade. I loved the shapes within Orchardson's sculptural pieces and the light and shade around the sculptures which changed as you walked around the pieces. I like the repeating quality of the shapes and the geometric patterns they create. I found this inspirational as i have been using geometric shapes within my work so far.
Then at BMAG I particularly liked this painting by Henri Fantin-Latour. I love the hues in this painting which are bright yet sad and almost funereal. The detail on the petals is amazing. I recognised this as the same artist which Peter Saville featured/reproduced on the cover for Power, Corruption and Lies. Saville used the classical and romantic painting and contrasted it with his modular, colourful coding.
I love the colours in this stained glass window by Henry Payne. I would like to use acetate to print some of my work and get these vivid and luscious tones.
I was intrigued by these pencil drawings by Kenneth Martin which represent kinetic structures and investigate movement. A simple square has been transformed into a number of different permutations.

Parent animation
Incorporating the illustration i have been experimenting with and words that i generated when thinking about my parents:

Homage development
I have been looking more into circuit drawing and taking my line sketches out of the context of the circuit board to make it more abstract.
I have also been playing with the DNA profiling shapes. I have used the word 'security' as that is a feeling I thought of when thinking about what my parents mean to me. I have played with a vector and handdrawn version and I like the warm delicate quality it gives to the letters.

Typeface development
I have developed a typeface based on a beautiful railing which i have noticed at my local park. I like the unusual counter this letter R has.
It is also inspired by the stone carvings on a number of the old houses leading down to the park. I love the angular letter shapes, all slightly uneven.

So I started with recreating the R and then the full upper case character set:

Homage experimentation
Widening the subject area to Parents for this brief, I have started looking at electrical circuit diagrams to explain the feeling of my family unit - organised, strong, the power/love/guidance coming from my parents and i thought it would be nice to overlay this illustration over old photos.
I have also been looking at the decoding of genes and chromosomes and I thought this could be adapted as a beautiful type treatment in an animation with the letters fading down in blocks.

Homage
I have decided to do my Homage brief about my nan who was a big influence in my life. I have lots of happy memories about the time i spent with my nan and so i think there is a lot of potential narrative to develop within this brief. My nan encouraged me to draw and taught me drawing techniques. I used to love visiting her as she would tell us fantastical stories about characters she had met and she would treat me and my brother all the time with plenty of sweets and chocolates, which she kept in a secret drawer and which was always full of different sweets every time we went.
I have started by looking at memories of my nan with a couple of test animations about the furnishings of her room, chintz and lace, and a memory i have of picking elderberries in the summer.
The human figure
I will looking at the work of Farrow for my essay on the human figure in art and design. I have chosen Farrow for their work with the Manic Street Preachers for their Lifeblood campaign and with Spiritualized featuring sculptures by Don Brown.

Art history research
After looking at images that inspire me for my FMP I have widened my research by connecting these images to other points in art history which have been inspired by or took inspiration from the original artist.
